V    Courses Developed

1. SS-412: Polity and Society in India
This is a course about the political sociology of India. It introduces key concepts and major approaches to studying polity and society. It pays special attention to social movements in colonial and post-colonial India.

2. SS-429: Modern Indian Social Thought
This is a course for M.A. students about society and ideology in India during the 19th and 20th century. It was developed and introduced by Dr. Kumar in 1992. It is one of the most successful interdisciplinary courses of the Centre for the Study of Social Systems.

3. SS-616: Sociology of Modernization and Development
This is a M.Phil. level course. It approaches the dynamics of social changes in the context of modernization and development. It provides theoretical and empirical insights with special attention to the process of globalization.

4. SS-632: Media, Democracy and Nation Building
This is an M.Phil. level course. It provides a theoretical and cross-cultural perspective about the inter-relations between media, democracy and nation building. Dr. Kumar developed and introduced it in 1994.

VIII    Personal Data

Dr. Anand Kumar was born in 1950 and is married to Dr. Manjula, a sociologist, and has a son - Amitabh.

In the 1960s he was an activist with the Socialist youth movement and became President of the Banaras Hindu University Students Union in the early 1970s. He was expelled from the BHU in 1972 for his activities in democratising the university education. In 1974 he held the Presidency of the Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union, establishing the Free Thinkers. He was also among the national convenors of the Anti-Corruption Student Youth Movement of 1974 (famous as J.P. Movement). He qualified for a national scholarship to study abroad and did a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. He was victimised by the Emergency Regime of India for his role in anti-Emergency mobilization and the National Scholarship was confiscated.

Dr. Anand Kumar began his academic career by joining the Banaras Hundu University (Varanasi) as a lecturer in sociology in 1979. He joined the Centre for the Study of Social Systems as Associate Professor at the School of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi) in 1990. He has also served as Secretary of the B.H.U. Teachers Association (1981) and as Secretary (1993) and President (1997) of the JNU Teachers Association. He has been a visiting scholar at M.S.H. (Paris) and at the Institute of Sociology of Albert-Ludwigs University (Freiburg).

As a political sociologist, he is engaged in studying state-society interfaces in the contexts of social changes like modernization, nation-building, social movements, and globalization.

Currently, he is coordinating Globalisation Study Circle at J. N. U. - a discussion and research group engaged in study of the socio-cultural dynamics of globalization process.
