Today
Freiburg, the economic and cultural center on the Oberrhein, today has something like
204.000 citizens and is the only major city in Baden-Württemberg with a constantly rising
number of inhabitants.
The region around Freiburg represents the third great area of economic boom in
Baden-Württemberg with the region around Stuttgart and north Baden taking the lead. As
far as economic- and Structural-policies are concerned, Freiburg is aiming for a middle
ground that helps to preserve the cities and unique flair while allowing a sustainable
economic development. Freiburg today is setting itself high aims: it strives to strike a
balance between ecology and economy, tries to provide cultural highlights in co-operation
with its institutes of higher education and the university, and finally tries to establish
transnational partnerships across the neighboring borders of France and Switzerland.
A brief history
The city had been founded in 1120 by the Duke of Zähringen. Situated conveniently near
the Rhine an other routes of travel and commerce, Freiburg became a center political and
economic power early on. Especially from the middle of the thirteenth century onwards the
city developed into the flourishing heart of the South-West. During the fourteenth century
Freiburg succumbed - though without pressure - to the reign of the Habsburg dynasty which
reigned over the city until 1806. After the 30 year war, Freiburg was also the home of the
governmental administration of lower Austria. For a while - mainly due to war - Freiburg
changed its legal alliances and affiliation between the Habsburg dynasty and France many
times. Only with the restoration of the political map after the Napoleonic Wars did
Freiburg fall into the hands of the Dukedom of Baden. A decisive role in the life of the
city was always played by the University, founded in 1457 by the Austrian Archduke
Albrecht. Today Freiburg plays not only host to the alma mater, but also to four further
institutions of higher education, five Fraunhofer- and two Max-Planck-Institutes.
